I don't think network marketing works as well as it could or as well as some people think it does. I think the main reason people think it is a scam is the requirement for everyone in the business to buy the product, often a minimum amount every month. No other industry sector has this. It is unique to MLM. It is not a good way to do business. It artificially inflates the performance of the company. Another thing is the complicated compensation plans. These only ever benefit a few people who either started the business or got in at the start.
The marketing methods are always the same. The company almost inevitably originates in North America. When it expands overseas it expects all other countries to accept the 'American Way'. In the UK for example there is great resistance to this and the companies are too intransigent to change their approach so blame whatever they call their sales agents. I have yet to see an MLM company that I wanted to represent. However I am enormously frustrated that a product I really love is only sold through MLM!!!

My guess is that Network Marketing works to the degree that it can be used to build intimacy, and therefore trust. No one will invest with me because of my postings here, rather it is an entree, that may, or not, lead to further interest down the line......

I am new in Network Marketing and glad I found this group. I hope to exchange some helpful ideas. Anyone in the group involved in Buzzirk Mobile/Global Verge? We are going to be marketing the new Buzzirk Mobile by Zero1 unlimited everything service. It should be available mid August.

Great topic... and wonderful insight from many. I've been in/out of the "Direct Selling" or Network Marketing world for about 12 years. I remember as a kid helping my dad pick up and deliver supplies for his "sales" customers. It was fun.
I enjoy it, but it's definitely not easy. I think that with the press/media giving lots of attention to the benefits of it lately, it may ease some of the negativity, make it more of an option for more people, opening doors for us all.
Build a huge list, and get through it fast. If you're not talking to them, someone else is. I "prospected" one guy I thought would be great - and learned he had been involved with the same company for 4 years. Yet, he never mentioned it. He said he's kicking himself now and won't let that happen again. :)
Just like with B2B or retail or other sales - if you're not selling to that customer right now, someone else is.
Build your business, but with the good of others in mind (your customers, your upline and your downline) your business will be blessed beyond your imagination. Find a way to get your kids or the special kids in your life involved and help them learn lots and dream big.
Work hard. Have Fun. Make Money. Change Lives... and keep focused on your goals and work/life balance.

I think the main secret that network marketing works is that everyone is building a business for themselves yet with the help of a team.

So you don`t have to constantly motivate workers like when you are a boss - they want to be successful for themselves.

Of course you get the chaff with the wheat - some people are destined to fail because they programme themselves to.

BUT if the product is good and you believe in it, and the company is solid and supportive and most of all you believe in yourself and have a goal, it cannot fail.

Low start up costs are also a huge bonus in network marketing companies.
I`d recommend it to everyone in todays worrying economic climate.

I am involved with a network marketing program. The product is unique, I believe in it, and I have not had 1 business tell me they are not interested in the product. There is so much support that everyone offers it is mind blowing. On top of this there is constant training with webinars both present and past that you could listen to in your free time. In 18 months, this company will be going public with stock options. I have truely found a way to spend more time with my family while helping businesses grow and retain in an economy where advertising is being scaled back. If you would like more info I encourage you to visit my page. Great discussion with great feedback and ideas.Way to go Rarchar.

Wow! what an ocean of advice and information.

Network marketing is definitely the way to freedom, but too often, most people mistake it for a scam.

I have been involved in NM for a few years, only one has truly captivated my soul and that is personal development. I believe that when network marketing is combined with personal development, then there is no need for anything else.

Many people fail in NM because they lack the knowledge to build and sustain their team. It takes a certain kind of mental toughness to be able to approach people and to take rejections. Rejection is the number one reason why most people quit. For most people, it is safer to be in a 9-5 job than to deal with rejections.

In my opinion, in order to make it in NM, one has to first be the student or the customer. Then one has to be passionate with the product, and then sell the product.
The time scale between the sign up and the success might take months even years in some cases. In my few years in this business, I have noticed that those who get hot quick often get cold quick. Our business is a long distance run not a sprint, this is the reason why I always advice any new member of my team to never quit their day job until they have acquired sufficient knowledge of how to run a business.

NM works with careful planning, consistency, passion, being coachable and trainable.
The end result is priceless, FREEDOM.

I am glad to be part of this forum.

I think Network Marketing is the best opportunity for anyone. However, it's not for everyone. One of the major flaws in this business is the training. Too many times people sign up and then the upline just leaves them hanging. People get involved because of the allure of big money, quitting their jobs, and then when they soon realize they have to actually do more than go to the mailbox, it's not as much fun. But it is very exciting, the advantage of the internet greatly increases anyone's opportunity for success.
