I have been in the printing and graphic arts business for 26 years and I'm currently using many techniques to get new clients. None of them include "cold calling." Twenty years ago people had time to meet with you and hear about new ideas from salespeople and I built a huge business base from cold calling. Today everyone is doing the work of several people and have deadlines, meetings and an overabundance of work. If they do take the time to meet with you now, they are mostly the "time waster" personalities.

In 2003, I started selling copiers and all the sales managers wanted you out cold calling all day. "Don't want to see you in the office after 9am" was their daily speech. See 100 new people and get 1 or 2 good leads. Apparently they thought being 1-2% successful would make you successful. Instead it makes you worn down with a large box of useless business cards. So instead, I designed my own postcard and brochure and sent highly specialized marketing to specific companies I researched in detail at Hoover's. Guess what happened? People started calling me because I had explained why I was different than most copier salespeople and how I became an expert in color.

Today I use direct mail campaigns, networking groups, email campaigns via iContact, planting the seed for referral business early in the sales process (and asking for referrals once I close), Frank's flyer idea, Sales Genie, my websites www.heartprinting.com and www.howtobuycopiers.com and eBay and Craig's List to get new clients.

With 26 years of experience, I view myself as a teacher at heart and enjoy helping others to learn how to market differently. How about data mining, marketing to each prospect differently based on what you know about them, using social networks and offering white papers and free advise to let folks know you are an expert? How about simplifying your flyer and not trying to close the deal on a flyer? My old flyers were very detailed and lengthy and got almost no response. (Prospects don't really care about your company history and self-promotion). I reduced it down to 2 paragraphs after reading Frank's Cold Calling is a Waste of Time and added a faxback form at the bottom. Now my flyer says if you're unhappy with your current printer, my 25+ years of experience can change that and if you can save money by bringing work in-house I can consult on that as well. No company history, no list of presses or capabilities, just a simple statement...If you have a problem, I can help.

Let's share what works here and all increase our business without knocking on strangers doors!

Hi Gregory,
Using flyer's is a good way to get leads. The most important part of a flyer or any other of form of marketing, is the message your are trying to convey to the read and what you want them to do.
Since you don't like cold calling I have the perfect marketing tool for you. Go to http://www.123hotleads.com to learn about it then get back to.me with any questions you may have.
Have a great day.

What is the concept behind Frank's preaching of Flyers? Is that a way to generate leads? I am starting from scratch and want to know how to get leads without resorting to cold calling

Hey
Craigslist is the "Bomb" for my business. Can't say enough about the number and quality of the leads I take in but I had to test plenty. My offer takes you to a website where you sign up for my eReport that is of course delivered via autoresponder. The email itself is in HTML format and the copy has been throughly vetted. I'm not trying to sell anything on Craiglists just offer Information, my only purpose is to get an appointment. "Free Initial Consultation" followed by my Fax #, email address and of course my toll free #. Is boldly displayed on my autoresponder email. The Craiglists Ad itself is short and sweet.
"Compelling Report" Learn why your company website isn't making you a dime!. Followed by my the web address for my opt-in page which then generates a prewritten autoresponse when the form is submitted. Hope this helps.
All The Best

You mentioned that you are looking for a better way to attract more people to your business without chasing them.
I have groups that I am building family web sites for them to keep track of their families and new events that are happening. Like graduations for example. You can put a link on these sites for you business. Your family members will go there to see new events, photos, or videos. You can ask your friends to check out your family site. We all love to see photos. There they will see the link for your business and can click on it to get mote information on what you are doing. Law of attraction. We build these site for less than most template site and you have more control and SEO for these. Each member can have their own page. Life chat and can be private for you family or friends. miltonwaters.com gotachat.com. This allow you to talk to people with out shoving business down their throats. And those that do contact you will be prequlafied.

Hi Window Expert!

You said "names and addresses" - why not a post card introducing yourself?

When I sold Avon; my post cards were EXTREMELY helpful and my customers would use a code for a discount so I knew where the lead came from.

Lastly, this was before the "targeted" market days and I was shooting in the dark (yellow pages, etc) and I ALWAYS hit something ;-)

The marketing possibilities are endless to the open mind,
~Kimberly~
